Arthur Ashe
Arthur Robert Ashe Jr , American tennis player born the July 10th 1943 with Richmond, Virginia (the United States) and deceased the February 6th 1993 with New York, New York (the United States).
Biography
Arthur Ashe obtains in 1963 a purse of the the University of California to Los Angeles (UCLA) and it joined the famous American team of Coupe Davis (he is the first player selected Afro-American). In 1968, it gains the US Open, becoming thus the first Noir player to have gained a tournament of the Grand Slam and only with Yannick Noah, that besides it detected at the time of a round in Yaounde in Cameroun. This year, it also forms part of the victorious American team in Coupe Davis. In 1970, it is essential in the Open one of Australia and in 1975 it beats, with the general surprise, Jimmy Connors finally of Wimbledon. It puts a term at its career in 1980, following cardiac problems. It will have gained on the whole during its career of professional tennis player 33 tournaments, including 3 tournaments of the Grand Slam. He was also president of the association of the professional tennis players (ATP) in 1974 and trainer of the American team of Coupe Davis.
Arthur Ashe was also a very committed sportsman: support for the Black cause in South Africa during the Apartheid, defense of the refugees Haiti ens in the United States, fights against the AIDS (it itself was infected by HIV at the time of a blood transfusion).
The central court of Flushing Meadows (where the US Open one is played) bears its name.
In 2005, the American journalists of Tennis Magazine elected Arthur Ashe with the 30e row of the " forty great champions of Tennis of these forty last années" (men & women confused), behind Lindsay Davenport (29e) and in front of Justine Henin-Hardenne (31e).
