Artemare
Artemare is a common French, located in the department of the Ain and the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
Village of the Valromey located at 16 km of Belley and 8 km of Culoz and of the Rhone in the department of Ain, Artemare is exposed to the south between two links of the Massif of the Jura: Planachat in the west and the Dovecote which culminates with the Large-Dovecote (1538 m of altitude) in the east. It is thus a village bugist, with the contact between Bas-Bugey and Haut-Bugey, not far from Savoy and of Isere. Artemare is sprinkled by a network of three rivers: the river of Yon, channeled to cross the village, actuated formerly sawmills and always feeds the fish ponds with trouts of the Michallet hotel. It is thrown in the Flax comb, itself flow from the Rhone which it joined close to Culoz. The hamlet of Cerveyrieu gave its name to a cascade, falls of the Flax comb of about fifty meters, and is located at the west of the third river, Arvière that here, everyone calls Groin and who forms a confluence with the Flax comb. Face mask and Flax comb deeply notched the calcareous relief, the first ground fate on the commune of Vieu - in-Valromey, in a spectacular intermittent source, before forming a deep canyon quite visible with the Pont of the Devil , second dug cascade of beautiful Cerveyrieu upstream potholes where water whirls… when the Flax comb is not dry. Village located 1 kilometer from Gift (Common of Vieu).
History
According to Louis Berthelon, Artemare was not, with the whole beginning that “an small group of dwellings located above the hill called Molard” and it is its “admirable situation dominating the vast marshes extending from Le Bourget with Cerveyrieu which was worth its name of Altemare to him, or High-Sea”, become later Artemare. Does the tradition want that holy Martin évangélisé the area which was devoted until there to pagan worships (Yon = Io?), in any case, the church of Artemare is dedicated to him and it gave its name to a close locality, Saint Martin's day de Bavel. Louis Berthelon was pharmacist of his trade, but historian deeply attached to the village, it reported in his work " Artemare at times anciens" appeared in 1948, religious, political and administrative history of the locality since the Prehistory: Gallic and Roman period, Gallo-Roman villas at the origin of the current place names, in particular those in - ieu (for example, Talissieu comes from Talussus, the name of his/her Donnus son gave Don etc), invasions in particular that of the " sarrazins" occupying the plate of Fierloz (a locality always bears the name " under Carraz"!), plagues of the the Middle Ages etc After having been a direct field of the counts then dukes of Savoy, Valromey is occupied of 1536 to 1559 by François Ier and Henri II, and of 1595 to 1601 by Henri IV, it becomes definitively French at the same time by the Traité of Lyon of January 17th, 1601 as the Bresse, the Bugey and the Country of Gex and well before close Savoy which will be attached to France by Napoleon III only in 1860. In 1612, Honore d' Urfé, the author of " Astrée" , while inheriting her mother, born Renee of Savoy, becomes the first marquis of Valromey, Verromey, in local patois; this name appears in the texts under the names of Verrumensi in 1110, Veromensi (1142), Verrometum (1169) and undoubtedly derives from Venetonimagus or in the past from Vernemetonimagos (Gone of the Large Sanctuary?). The etymology " Vallis Romana" , Roman valley, would be the invention of scholars Latinists. Cerveyrieu, Yon, Artemare and Ameyzieu, parish which included Artemare until the French revolution, were still of small villages until the dissolution of the commune of Ameyzieu in 1862 (now common of Talissieu) and the formation of that of Yon-Artemare, “it was not any more question but of Artemare” starting from January 1st, 1886. Artemare, or more exactly at the time Yon and Cerveyrieu, was known for its manufacture of flat-bottomed boats making it possible to join by the Flax comb the wearing of Culoz on the Rhone, in particular for the trade of wood. A " tram of Bugey" (small steam train) functioned between Virieu-the-Large and Ruffieu, via the " grimpette of Artemare" , of 1898 to 1933. December 29th, 1923, an accident with Faverge (Champagne), caused the death of the mechanic and the driver. As point out it the war memorials commune, Artemare paid its tribute with the two wars of 1914-1918 and 1939-1945; at the time of the Second world war, Kommandantur sat at the hotel Bérard (today Michallet) and the inhabitants of Artemare knew the Deportation, the captivity, Resistance (maquis of high Valromey, groups of the secret army, ACE), a " Building site of jeunesse" (attacked by the maquis to get equipment) and collaboration. A monument in edge of the road of the collar of Lèbe, close to Bioléaz (Belmont-Luthézieu), and a score of steles or plates, on the spot where the Resistant ones were held or cut down, testify some in Artemare and in the surroundings.Like writes it Louis Berthelon quoting Ovide to conclude his work, “they are piles labor to write the history of his country”!.
