Artem Mikoyan

Artem Ivanovitch Mikoyan (August 5th 1905 with Sanahin, Arménie - December 9th 1970) was an originator of Soviet plane , in partnership with Mikhaïl Gourevitch, forming the research department MiG.

After having been workman turner with Rostov-sur-le-Don it was conscript. After its military service it entered to the academy of the air force Joukovski, obtaining its diploma in 1937. It will coopéra with Polikarpov before being appointed chief from the new research department in Moscow in December 1939. Together with Mikhaïl Gourevitch it created an office to conceive a series of hunters. In March 1942 the office was famous OKB MiG ( Osoboye Konstruktorskoye Buro ), ANPK MiG ( Aviatsionnyy nauchno-proizvodstvennyy kompleks ) and OKO MiG. The Migone was not very a good start, the Mig-3 did not find its niche and the following was prototypes of research.

The Mig-9 of 1946 appeared in the immediate future after war, based on jets German S captured, and furnished informations by Great Britain and the United States. Then the I-270 prototype became the Mig-15 of which 15  000 specimens were built. As from 1952 Artem Mikoyan conceived also the systems of missiles intended to be adapted to its planes. It continued to produce high performance hunters during the years 1950 and 1960.

It twice accepted the highest civil distinction, the decoration of Héros of socialist work, and was appointed in six Supreme Soviets. His/her older brother Anastase was a Soviet politician.

After the death of Mikoyan the name of the research department was changed Mikoyan-Gourevitch into simply Mikoyan . However designation remained MiG .
