Arteaga is a municipio of the Mexican State of Coahuila.

History

  • In 1580, of the families of Tlaxcaltèques settled in this place which they named San Isidro of mow Palomas.

  • the October 31st 1591, the captain Francisco de Urdiñola founded officially this place and its name preserved to him.
  • San Isidro of mow Palomas was occupied by the French troops, in partnership with the forces of the general Felix Doway, in 1865 and 1866. These troops behaved suitably.
  • on December 29th, 1866, the general Andrés S. Viesca, governor and military commander, conceded the title of city in San Isidro of mow Palomas which it re-elected Arteaga, in memory of the general Jose María Arteaga Magallanes, born in the State d' Aguascalientes in 1833, which was governor of the State of Querétaro and was shot by the French troops with Uruapan in 1865.
  • the February 25th 1913, Venustiano Carranza establishes its general headquarter there.
  • the March 2nd 1911, it wrote there first proclamation of the Révolution.

In addition to the actress Beatriz Aguirre Valdés, several governors of the Coahuila were born in Arteaga.

Geography

The municipio is located at the south-east of the State, to 18 km of its capital, Saltillo. It forms some with Ramos Arizpe and Saltillo the principal agglomeration. Arteaga is divided into 366 localities.
De many mountains frame Arteaga: the sierra of San Antonio in the east, sierras of los Lirios, Huachichil, mow Vigas and Nieve. They forrment the sierra of Arteaga which is part of the Eastern Sierra Veined. The relief is very mountainous with cañons and of high mountains: sierra of Coahuila (3500 m), sierra of San Antonio (3500 m), sierra of San Lucas (3200 m), sierra of los Lirios (2770 m) and Cerro of Carbonera (2340 m).
The climate is semi arid and enough heat but the mountainous areas are more fraiches and keep their snow-covered cover the major part of the year. A zone, the Siberia , is called Switzerland of Coahuila. The annual average temperature goes from 12 to 16 °C. Annual precipitations are from 4 to 500 mm with rains from May to July like in November and January. The dominant winds come from the North-East with a mean velocity from 15 to 20 km/h. It annually from 40 to 60 days of froze there and 2 to 3 of grêles.
The forests are the exploited natural main resources. There are also some careers. In rural area, the ground is used to produce adobe.
The land and buildings are very divided in Arteaga. The Pomme S are the principal agricultural production. Arteaga provides 80% of the production of the état.
