Art Together off Chicago

The Art Together Off Chicago is an instrumental group son of AACM. Initially quartet in 1967 including/understanding the trumpet player To ballast Bowie, the saxophonists Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell and the bass player Malachi Favors (affublé of a supernumerary name Maghostut ), then by the Roscoe Mitchell Art Together (with Robert Crowder with the battery).

After this period of groping in the denomination and manpower, Art Together off Chicago is born in Paris in its form, in 1969 and the following years. Later the integration of (Famoudou) Don Moye with the battery in 1970 completes the change: the quartet is henceforth quintet.

Quintet? If one wants, because this group will grow rich punctually by other members: the spiritual Master Muhal Richard Abrams (1973-74) or Cecil Taylor (1984), but by integrating only for one recording the vocalists Low Fontella (1970), Chicago Beautiful (1970) and even, at the time of a disc and of a series in concerts to the Old man-Dovecote, Brigitte Fontaine (1969-70).

Quintet? If one wants, because each one of its members is surrounded with the passing of years of multiple instruments, of which it uses with the liking of the inspiration: accordion, clarinet viola and other clarinets, alto flute, alto sax, basso, ballophone, flute of bamboo, banjo, baritone, low, saxophone low, various species of batteries, bassoon, clarinet in Bb, low clarinet, balaphon, bells, to bendir, bongos, mysterious bike horn, celesta, congas, chekere, claves, shells, cymbals, cythar, batteries, djimbe, djun-djun, donno, strange “elephant horn” (let us say one oliphant), low Fender, flute, bugle, guitar, glockenspiel, gongs, various horns (the kelphorn in particular), log drum, long horn, marimbas, maracas, mélodica, oboe, various percussions, piccolo, siren, soprano, sopranino, steel-drums, steer-horn, drum, Tom-Tom, trumpet, trap-drums, sax tenor, tympanon, vibraphone, various whistles, woodblocks, zyther, without forgetting that sometimes, it give voix.
Art Together Off Chicago is a shop of music to him all alone.

The metamorphosis of the unit finished, the quintet returns to Chicago, but for better traversing the world (primarily Europe and Japan).

A concert of Art Together Off Chicago starts late sometimes, because the group starts by being dressed in multi-coloured colors (boubou S and other tunics) and chooses paintings of war which decorate their faces (except Lester Bowie, sober in its strict costume, immaculate, tie sobrement). Begin the alchemy of the “Great Black Music” : mixing the antiquated one and the ultramodern one, African rates/rhythms and evocations of large old of the jazz or European references, prehistory of the jazz (of the Bayou S, in the “barrel house” and the “honky tonks”, songs of the “minstrels”) and experimentation, cries and whispers, the polyphonies gordiennes and solis perfectly ordered, the serious one and the sarcastic remark, and humor, and irony, and the pathetic one, reverence and the iconoclastie, passed and present, in a Patchwork variegated output with largest serious, a talk of musicology applied. Art Ensemble is an alive paradox, even a permanent Oxymoron. All that holds of the Bacchanale, the worship panics, the ceremony Vaudou and contemporary research, but in a controlled unfolding, a ceremonial meticulous person.

The passion for the Free weakening jazz, the activity of the group bends, the more so as a share of this public, attracted not by the jazz or anything of other, but by the reading of these “connected” periodicals for which any innovation is interesting from the start, but, not being more, so an innovation, turns over in the limbs. Death starts to decimate it: Lester Bowie victim of a cancer of liver is not replaced in a convincing way, but the group always saw, in spite of the recent disappearance of Malachi Favors (2004). The current formation includes/understands Famoudou Don Moye (D, perc), Roscoe Mitchell (sax), Joseph Jarman (sax), Jaribu Shahid (b), Corey Wilkes (tp).
