Art Spiegelman
Art Spiegelman is an American author of Cartoon , born the February 15th 1948 with Stockholm (Sweden).
Emblematic figure of the current underground of the cartoon of the Sixties and Seventies, it contributed to the reviews Real Pulp , Young Lust and Bizarre Sex . It also illustrated the many ones and various stickers and packages of charts to be collected (the Garbage Pail Kids which became Crados in French). In 1980, it launched the publication of two famous anthologies: Arcade , with Bill Griffith, and RAW with its wife, the artist and French novelist Francoise Mouly.
In 1986, it publishes the first volume of Maus. A survivor tells ( Maus: In Survivor' S Bruises , also published under the title Maus: My Father Bleeds History published in French under the title My father bleeds the history ), which recalls the life of its family (told by her father) during the Holocauste. The continuation and end of this history ( Maus: from Mauschwitz to the Catskills published in French under the title And it is there that my troubles began ) leaves in 1991. It is the first time that a Cartoon draws as much to it the attention of criticisms. Maus will be the object of an exposure to the museum of modern art of New York, and will obtain in 1992 a Prix Pulitzer special.
Spiegelman worked for the New Yorker but resigned a few months after the terrorist attacks of the September 11th, 2001. Its cover for the New Yorker after September 11th was acclaimed. It seemed with the first access being completely black, but after examination, one could distinguish the silhouettes from the turns of the World Trade Center in shades of a major black.
He stated to have resigned to denounce the leading conformism which seized the American Médias . Spiegelman is virulent critical of the policy of George W. Bush and described the media as being “timid and preserving”. He complained that the New Yorker had censured several of its projects of covers, like that presenting a atomic bomb for the July 4th or that of Thanksgiving which showed American military aircrafts releasing turkeys above the Afghanistan.
In 2004, Art Spiegelman publishes In the shade of the dead towers ( In the Shadow off No Towers ) where he tells his experiment of the attacks twin towers, and of its psychological effects.
Lastly, it should be noted that it is one of the largest defenders of the Cartoon as media. He traverses the the United States by giving titrated conferences Commix 101 . He and Francoise Mouly are also editors of a series of anthologies for children called Little Lit .
