Artūras Paulauskas

Artūras Paulauskas is the current President (2004) of the Parliament of Republic of Lithuania (or Seimas ) and former President by interim of the country after the dismissal of the President Rolandas Paksas.

Artūras Paulauskas was born the August 23rd 1953 with Vilnius. Paulauskas follows studies of Droit to the university of Vilnius which it leaves graduate in 1976. It continues then a fast career in the legal apparatus of the Soviet socialist Republic of Lithuania which leads it to the station of Procureur general assistant in 1987. It is named public prosecutor in 1990, station which it leaves in 1995 to engage in policy starting from 1997, at the sides of its mentor, the renovating Communiste Algirdas Brazauskas, then President of the Republic.

At the time of the presidential election of 1998, Brazauskas decides to yield its place and supports its Paulauskas dolphin which is presented under the label of LDDP (or PDLT for its French anagram). Paulauskas arrives in first position at the first turn with nearly 40% of the votes but is made all the same beat by Valdas Adamkus, candidate of center-right, in a second very tight turn with 49,69% of the voices against 50,31%.

Paulauskas leaves the LDDP and founds a new party of center-left, the New union ( Naujoji sąjunga (socialliberalai) or NS-SL) in 1998. At the legislative elections of October 2000, the New union of Paulauskas arrives in second position at the number of votes (19,6%) but in third position for the number of seats at the Seimas (29). This position, and of alliances, make it possible Paulauskas to be made elect president of the Seimas the October 19th 2000.

Following the dismissal of President Rolandas Paksas for worsened corruption the April 6th 2004, Paulauskas is constitutionally named President by interim of Lithuania, posts that he will assume until the election of Valdas Adamkus, its old adversary, the July 12th 2004.
