Geography

The Arros is one of the principal affluents of the Adour. Taking its source in the Forest of Baronnies , to the north of the Collar of Aspin, it crosses the department of the Hautes-Pyrénées of the south towards north, passing by Borough-with-Bigorre, Tournay and Chelle-Debate, then penetrates in the Département of Gers by Montégut-Arros before joining Adour shortly after Plaisance.

Principal affluents

In spite of the narrowness of its basin, it receives some small affluents: the Luz , the Stop In front of and the Stop Darré left bank, then the Muds Right Bank.

Hydrography

It is a capricious torrent, whose water level varies with the liking of the storms and the snow melt.

Historically

The valley of Arros formed, with the valley of Adour and the buttresses pyrénée NS, the Comté of Bigorre. The country of Arros was called “Rustan” or “River-High” , unlike the valley of Adour, called “River-Low” .

Some pretty monuments furrow the valley of Arros, like the abbeys of the Escaladieu not far from Tournay (65), of Saint-Sever-with-Rustan (65), or the Château of Gaston Phébus with Mauvezin (65), witness of some conflicts which were perpetrated in this border region.
