LArromanches , Aircraft carrier of light combat, is the prototype of a series of nine aircraft carriers of Classe Glory. Its construction with begun on June 1st 1942 with the building sites Vickers-Armstrong (the United Kingdom). Launched on September 30th, 1943 and commissioned in December 1944, it is built-in the Royal Navy under the name of Colossus . The Colossus was rented with the French National marine in August 1946 for one five years duration. The National marine renames it name Arromanches , intended to perpetuate the memory of the unloading of June 1944 and buys it in 1951.

Chronology

  • 1947 : Cruising in AOF, company of the armoured '' Richelieu ''.

  • 1948 : Countryside of Indo-China, with the flotillas 4F (equipped with ten SBD Dauntlesses and two Seafires) and 8F. The mission lasted three months including six weeks of war (152 missions and 255 hours of flight).
  • 1949 : the Arromanches returned to France.
  • 1950 : Large Careenage, new countryside of Indo-China.
  • 1951 : Armed with the flotillas 1F equipped with the F6F Hellcats and 3F equipped with the SB2C Helldivers.
Bought in Royal Navy. New countryside of Indo-China, tackles transportation routes, transport and brought closer air support.
  • 1952 : Return to Toulon in June, and new departure towards Indo-China at the end of August with the flotillas 12F equipped with the F6F Hellcats and the 9F armed with SB2C Helldivers.
  • 1953 - 1954: Return to Toulon in February. New departure for Indo-China on September 9th, 1953 with the 11F and the flotillas 3F armed with F6Fs and SB2Cs which take part in the battle of Ðiện Biên Phủ. Exceeded French aviation calls upon the planes C-117 Flying Boxcar of CAT of Claire Chennault, of the flying Tigres to parachute troops and equipment. The May 7th 1954 Diên Biên Phủ falls to the hands from the Vietnamese soldier-minh.
  • 1954 - 1955: Return to Toulon in September 1954. After careenage, built-in within the maritime forces of the Mediterranean.
  • 1956 : Intervention in Suez, in company of the Fayette , with 14 F and 15F equipped with the Corsair and 9F equipped in Grumman TBM Avenger destroyers. These units accepted the order to run the Egyptian fleet in roads of Alexandria (Operation “Musketeer”), the mission was abandoned following the presence of ships of the 6th US Fleet.
  • 1957 - 1958: Installation of an oblique bridge or and a mirror of landing, new equipment radar.
  • 1958 : Aircraft carrier of formation with Trade wind and of Fouga Zephyr M-175S.
  • 1961 : Intervention with Bizerte.
  • 1962 - 1974: Helicopter carrier of attack, with the 33F, the Arromanches continues to qualify pilots with the landing, (flotilla 53S). It makes it possible to study the fight ASM with the 31F.
  • 1967 September at October 13rd: exercise free-of the Ivory Coast interarmées Alligator III in Ivory Coast, with the squadron of the Mediterranean, the Clemenceau and the flotilla amphibian.
  • 1968 : Great careenage.
  • 1970 : From May 19th to 22nd: exercise of unloading Seagull on the coasts of Morbihan with the Clemenceau and the flotilla amphibian.
  • 1974 : Débaptisé on September 5th, 1974 (number of Q525 hull).
  • 1976 : Put on sale on May 5th.
  • 1977 : Bought by the metal Company Alexandrian Frères of Aubagne in December.
  • 1978 : Beginning of the building site of naval Demolition.

An embarked naval post office functioned on its board from June 1st, 1947 to January 22nd, 1974. It used successively 4 models of hexagonal stamp on date tireté comprising the name of the building.
