Lech Wałęsa /''/, (born with Popowo in Poméranie the September 29th 1943) was an electrician, before becoming the emblematic figure of a released Poland and a politician thanks to Solidarność, of which he was the president.

Creation of Solidarność

Its political career begin with its activity from leader from the trade union Solidarność ( Solidarité ), first autonomous labor union in the Soviet zone of influence. He is cofounder of this trade union with Anna Walentynowicz. This trade union was born from the dismissal of Anna Walentynowicz of the shipyards of Gdańsk; under its impulse and that of Wałęsa, this trade union quickly federated the workmen, denouncing without truces the dictatorship. Many strikes then burst in 1980, in particular in Gdańsk.

Intellectuals as Bronislaw Geremek joined it as of its origin and allowed him to have an ambition and a national breadth. This movement is asserted peaceful, is based on the Non-violence, strong symbol of the years Lech Wałęsa. Near to the Catholic church, Walesa will endeavor to limit the social movement in Poland: " The Church advises us to be always moderate, to be conscious, to find a compromise… It is we who moderate people. It is thanks to us that one does not draw on the capacity, sil the capacity was not rejected yet… Without us there would be already the popular revolt. And it is besides a capacity conscious of dimensions of the economic crisis which perhaps allowed the creation of Solidarność by knowing that we would play a part of reasonable shock absorber which will protect even the capacity and the Party against anger populaire" (Walesa at a meeting of Solidarnosc).

Lech Wałęsa as well as the members at the origin of Solidarność, were stopped on several occasions by the authorities of the working Parti unified Polish during the state of war at the beginning the Années 1980. Its family was also worried. Wałęsa under this pressure, would have briefly made a pact with the secret police, trying to convince the workmen to stop the strike (the recent opening of files, made it possible to confirm the existence of negotiations of Solidarność with the secret police). But the dynamism which it had launched carried it, and Wałęsa of adopting the opinion of the other leader members of Solidarność, carried by Anna Walentynowicz. With his companions of fight, it carried out rough negotiations with the capacity directed by the general Wojciech Jaruzelski, which led to a reform of the constitution.

Wałęsa President

He was elected president of the Republic at the time of the free elections of 1990, which saw the end of the time Communiste in Poland. Catholic enthusiast , it in that was particularly defended by his compatriot, the pope Jean-Paul II. He lost the presidential election into 1995 vis-a-vis Aleksander Kwaśniewski (ex-Communist). Many Polish voters indeed reproached him his too great moral conservatism and the important place of the Catholic church in the political life. In 2000, it was presented again but collected only less than 1% of the voices: in a democratic state, vis-a-vis many candidates broken with the government schemes and moreover, skilful speakers, its only talents of working trade unionist of Gdansk were not enough any more.

Lech Kaczynski and its twin brother had been his collaborators at the time of his accession to the report heading in 1990. It was then scrambled with them.

Reprocess political

Following its defeat with the elections of 2000, he announced his withdrawal of the world of the policy. He enjoys still at present a great prestige in his native land. Very many are those which consider it, at the sides of Jean-Paul II, like the liberator of Poland of the yoke Communiste. Its role was also determining in the fall of the “Iron curtain”. In 2005, at the time of the concert of Jean Michel Guard hair, Lech Wałęsa appeared and made a speech which touched the Poles and especially the workmen of Gdańsk.

In August 2006, following the revelations on enrôlement in Waffen-SS of the Nobel Prize of literature Fatty Günter, it required of the German writer to return the title of citizen of honor of the town of Gdansk
