Arpajon is a common French, located in the department of the the Essonne and the area Île-de-France.
During the French revolution the city was called Francval
Its inhabitants is called Arpajonnais .

Geography

The commune is located at 28 kilometers in the south of the entry of Paris (31 of the center), accessible by RN20, and with 20 kilometers in the north of Étampes. It is sprinkled by two rivers, the Orge and its affluent the Rémarde.

History

The village was founded as of the Roman epoch on the way connecting Lutèce (Paris) to Genabum (Orleans), a Roman camp supervised the passage of the Orge, it was called then Chastres then Châtres .

In 1960, vestiges of this time were found (in particular a cemetery). In 1006 the Bénédictins of the Abbaye of Saint-Maur rebuilt the church Saint-Clement which was in ruin, they added to it a cloister and a barn with said. There were several mills on the Orge and the Rémarde. Nowadays those have almost all disappeared.

In 1360, the city was besieged by the king of England and the church was burnt. In 1470 the seigniory of Chastres belonged to the lord of Marcoussis, the admiral de Graville, who authorized the market and made build a market.

In 1545, the seigniory of Chastres became independent and was held successively by three families until in 1720 where Louis de Severac, marquis of Arpajon bought it and its current name gave him.

To the Revolution, it bore the name of Francval and the lord of the place, Philippe de Noailles, was guillotine with his wife Anne-Claude d' Arpajon. The castle was sold in 1802 and was demolished.

In 1851 the Martin brothers, originating in Limoges, established a factory of shoes which, in 1900, employed 450 adults and approximately 50 children. She was repurchased by the André shoes in 1920 and closed definitively her doors in 1956. In the surrounding villages, Marcoussis, Linas, Montlhéry, the market gardening was very important and, of 1911 with 1936, a small train named the Arpajonnais connected these villages to the markets of Paris to bring there each morning tomatos, strawberries, beans cultivated in the fields.

Blasonnement of the commune: “Quartered, with the first, of mouths to the cross of money Toulouse; with the second, of money with four stakes of mouths; with the third, mouths with the gold toothing-stone; with the fourth, of azure with three flowers of gold lily, with the stick of mouths perished out of bar; on the whole of mouths to the Maltese cross of money. ”

Monuments

  • Market covered with the 15th century built in 1470, its roof was entirely remade in 1952, but it kept its aspect of origin.
  • a market takes place each Friday since the 13th century.
  • the church Saint-Clement (). In 1782, Benjamin Franklin installed a Paratonnerre there.
  • Old Hospital 15th century altered with, it sheltered in the beginning the pilgrims on the road of Saint-Jacob, it becomes a hospital under the Révolution, it became an old people's home in 1934, a new hospital having been built with the doors of the city. It was renovated in 1974 and accommodates approximately seventy people.
  • Arpajon shelters also cinematographic studios in which many films or television programs are turned. In fact, the studios are on the territory of Saint-Germain-the-Arpajon.

Transport

In addition to the access by the road, the commune of Arpajon is served by a station of the RER C (connects southern going from Paris to Dourdan by Brétigny).

Apart from the schedules of point, there are 2 oars of the RER per hour in each direction. Those going towards Paris pass to minutes 22 and 52 of each hour until 21:00, then, only one train per hour until that of 23:21. To return from Paris, the last train passes to 0:13 in Gare of Austerlitz to join Arpajon with 0:55. Then, there are some buses of night since 2005.

Sunday morning, there is only the one RER per hour.

Various lines of bus also serve the towns of Évry via Brétigny-sur-Orge, Boissy-under-Saint-Yon, Massy and the south of Paris via RN 20.

Events

  • the third weekend from September takes place with Arpajon the “Fair with beans”, trade event and artisanal which lasts four days. The bean celebrated here is the Chevrier.

Culture

Arpajon, high place of the cinema from its studios, is equipped with an independent cinema comprising five rooms, of which a big room of four hundred places. It is projected there each week between six and twelve films of exclusiveness like certain films, sometimes of art and test, in original version. Price of the place: 7,80 euros.
