Arnould of Holland
Arnould of Ghent , born with Ghent towards 951, killed on the Meuse the September 18th 993, was count in Plank of 988 with 993. He was wire of Thierry II, count in Plank, and of Hildegarde of Flanders.
He was born in Ghent from where the nickname which was allotted to him ( Arnulf Gandensis ). Its first mention in a contemporary document dates from the October 26th 970 where it is quoted with his parents. It just like appears his father and initially at his sides in many Flemish Charte S.
He married in May 980 Liutgarde (born in 955 with Brussels, girl of Sigefroy, count de Luxembourg). Luitgarde was the sister of Cunégonde of Luxembourg, wife of the emperor Henri II the Saint. Arnould and Luitgarde had three children:
- Adelaide († about 1045), married to Baudouin II, count de Boulogne, then with Enguerrand Ier, count de Ponthieu.
- Thierry III (towards 980 † 1044),
- Sigefroy (towards 980 † 1030)
Arnould was the first to fight against the Western Clippings in revolt. It offered part of its grounds (of which Bergan, today Hillegersberg, and Schie, today Overschie) at the edge of the Schie with the monastery of Egmont. Perhaps this donation has a relationship with the efforts of draining of the Dutch marshes by the monks of Egmont. It accompanied the emperor Othon II with Rome into 983 and increased its territories towards the south.
Arnould was killed on September 18th, 993, probably with the mouth of the Meuse. It was buried with other members of its family in the abbey of Egmont and it was canonized later. Liutgard offered the territory of Rugge to the Saint-Pierre abbey of Ghent the September 20th 993, as an offering for the safety of her husband. In July 1005, it réconcila with the Western Clippings in revolt.
