Arnoul III of Flanders
Arnoul III of Flanders , known as Arnoul the Unhappy , born in 1054 died in Bavinchove, close to Cassel the February 22nd 1071, was count de Flandre and of Hainaut of 1070 with 1071. It was wire of Baudouin VI, count de Flandre, and of Richilde, countess of Hainaut.
The course of its life
According to certain historians, awkwardnesses and the cruelty of his/her mother, Richilde de Hainaut, pushed by the king Philippe I {{er}} to take regency with the detriment of the brother of Baudouin, Robert the Clippings, quickly cause an insurrection of the nobility of the cities. According to other historians, it is the ambition of Robert the Clippings which encouraged it to start revolts.Arnoul III is killed with the foot of the Mount-Cassel in a combat with Bavinchove against Robert, which becomes count de Flandre, while the county of Hainaut falls to his/her younger brother Baudouin II of Hainaut (1056 - 1098).
It is buried by his uncle who builds to him a mausoleum with St-Bertin. The early death of this count is at the origin of the legend of Gerbodon, man-liege of Arnoul, which would have killed it and, taken remorse, would have required of the pope to cut the hands to him; this one would have ordered with its cook to carry out the work, except if they did not tremble, which would have occurred. Forgiven, Gerbodon would have finished its life with Cluny, in odor of holiness.
