Arnolfo di Cambio
Arnolfo di Cambio or Arnolfo di Lapo (Adhesive di Val of Elsa, 1245 - 1302/1310) is a Architecte and a Sculpteur Florentin. The monumental character of the work of Arnolfo left its mark on the aspect of Florence, and its monuments were used as example of funerary art Gothic.
Biography
Born in Tuscan, he was the pupil of Nicola Pisano with which he collaborated in the desk of Duomo of His (1265-1268). It took then its independence, and worked on important funerary sculptures, such as the statue of Charles Ier of Anjou (1266-67), today with the Musée of Capitole, or the monument of the Cardinal of Sling in the Saint-Dominique church with Orvieto (1282). He also worked with the decoration of the Basilique Saint-Paul-out-the-walls and the church Holy-Marie-of-Trastevere the with Rome (1285 and 1293). He also collaborated in the monument of the pope Boniface VIII (1300) and in the bronze statue of Saint Pierre to the Basilique Saint-Pierre.From 1294 to 1295, he worked with Florence as architect. Vasari claims that it was in load of the construction of the cathedral of the city, but this assertion since was contradicted. One nowadays allots to him the church of Santa Croce and the Palazzo Vecchio and more particularly the belfry (it turn-guet) which bears its name. Vasari him atrribue also the town-planning of the new city of San Giovanni Valdarno. It intervened in the construction of the market to the grains of Orsanmichele.
The date of its death is dubious. The only sure thing is that it former to 1310.
