Arnold Gehlen

Arnold Gehlen (1904-1976), Anthropologist and German Sociologist , is the principal one representing " philosophical Anthropology " who develops in the wake of the last works of the philosopher and sociologist max Scheler and of the philosopher and anthropologist Helmuth Plessner.

Gehlen develops a Anthropologie in rupture with the categories of the traditional Métaphysique which considers the man like a " to be of Culture " by nature ( Der Mensch ). The work of Gehlen concerns mainly on the concept of Technique, on the Institutions and the effects of the industrial company on the human life (studies which it describes as " psychosociologiques").

Work of Gehlen was a considerable success during years 50-60 and gave place to many debates, in particular with the representatives of the École of Frankfurt. If the contribution of Gehlen to the social sciences is not any doubt, it remains however discussed because of its compromising with the mode Nazi at the time of the Second world war.

Its theory of the institutions influenced considerably the work of the sociologists Helmut Schelsky and, more recently, Niklas Luhmann, within the framework of its theory of complexity.
