Arno Breker

Arno Breker (July 19th 1900 with Elberfeld - February 13rd 1991 with Dusseldorf) is a German sculptor. Official sculptor of the party Nazi, it maintained the personal relationship with Albert Speer and Adolf Hitler.

Its works are emblematic art Nazi and fascistic art in general, modernistic with influences mannerists and expressionnists. The sculptures of Breker establish the standards of this movement: imposing breadths, installations inspired supposed to express the force of the “Aryan race” and the party, adaptations of myths and representations of German heroes, dimensions often monumental.

Biography

Wire of a sculptor on stone, he studies the fine arts in his birthplace of Elberfeld then to Düsseldorf. Initially interested by the abstract art, it turns gradually to the traditional representations. It settles during some time with Paris, where he is the pupil of Aristide Maillol, then with Rome after having obtained the Prix of Rome in 1932. He is quickly recognized in all Europe.

In the middle of the years 1930, it approaches the Nazi party gradually. Appointed professor at the school of visual arts of Berlin, he is noticed by the ministry for the propaganda of Reich which places several orders to him. He will work with the project of refitting of Berlin with Albert Speer.

Breker accepts commissions Nazis and takes part in an exposure of its works in occupied Paris in 1942. This variously appreciated exposure will be greeted with enthusiasm by intellectuals of which Jean Cocteau.

In 1945, its workshop is requisitioned and certain its works are destroyed.

It will never be continued for its bonds with the Nazi regime, and it will always refuse to express regrets or excuses, estimating that the artists had nothing to do with the policy.

It will continue to carve until its death in 1991.

The museum Arno Brecker de Nörvenich presents its works to the public.
