Arnay-the-duke

Arnay-the-Duke is a common French, located in the department of the Coast-with Or and the area Burgundy.

Geography

This commune is located between the Morvan and the Auxois. It is about a crossroads where meet RN 6 (Paris - Lyon) and RN 81 which serves the center, via Autun; these roads being traced on old initially Gallo-Roman routes transportation (between Autun and Alesia), then medieval between the Rhone-native corridor and the Champagne fairs. Source of the river Arroux (pond of Barraux) which is thrown in the the Loire with Digoin (120 km).

History

  • In 1570, during the wars of religion, the catholic armies of the marshal of Thimble, are beaten there by the Protestant armies of Gaspard de Coligny. It was the first military engagement of Henri de Navarre, the future Henri IV.
  • Arrest of the aunts of the king Louis XVI in escape February-March 1791.

  • the December 3rd 1870, during the Franco-German war, a military engagement took place there.

Personalities related to the commune

  • General Baron Claude Testot-Ferry , veteran of the republican armies, imperial and royal, commander of the legion of honor, born with Arnay-the-Duke on May 20th 1773 and deceased with the Châtillon-on-Seine on August 25th 1856. A commemorative plaque was deposited on September 16th, 2007 on its native house (street of the three Turrets) at the time one day organized in its memory by the city and the Napoleonean Memory chaired by Alain Pigeard.

  • Claude Guyot , qualified schoolteacher of French, Latin and Greek to the Sadi-Carnot college of Dijon, former deputy of the Coast-with Or, mayor of Arnay-the-Duke until in 1965. He will die in the performance of his duties after about thirty years of municipal magistrature to the head of the town of Arnay-the-Duke. Large resistant during the second world war, he was president of the Departmental committee of the Release of Coast-in Or. In homage, the city will give its name to the college. Decorations: officer in the National order of the Legion of Honor, Military Cross with palm, knight in the Order of the academic palms.

  • Pierre Meunier , deputy and mayor of the commune, born in Dijon on August 15th, 1908 with Dijon, fact career in public finance and becomes Financial Comptroller with the ministries for the public health and work. He becomes acquainted with Jean Moulin to the cabinet of Pierre Cot Minister for the air in 1936. May 27th, 1943 it is named general secretary of the National council of the Resistance which Jean Moulin chairs. After the arrest of Jean Moulin it continues the clandestine fight at the sides of Georges Bidault who chairs C.N.R.En 1945-46 Pierre Meunier is principal private secretary of Maurice Thorez, minister of state, in charge of the public office, for this reason it works out the general status of the civils servant. Pierre Meunier fills of many electoral mandates: member of the Consultative Assembly, it is elected general adviser of Arnay-the-Duke in 1945, appointed Coast-in Or of 1946 to 1958, vice president of the National Assembly, regional adviser of Burgundy of 1976 to 1979. He will be mayor of Arnay-the-Duke of 1983 to 1989.
