Arms with foot
In the French Army, one calls weapons with foot the units not having never used horses.
The distinction between Weapon with horse and arms with foot does not have today more any functional aspect. On the other hand, it still influences the name of certain ranks and units, as well as the color of the buttons and badges of ranks.
Elements of distinction of the weapons to foot
Names
- a group of soldiers is called a Section.
- a group of sections is called a company.
The soldiers of the row of rank higher than a soldier are called Caporal, Caporal-chef. Warrant officers, Sergeant, Staff sergeant
Buttons and badges of rank
The buttons and badges of rank are yellow (or gilded) instead of the white (or silver plated) for the horse weapons. When the badges comprise also white, they are laid out conversely of the color of the weapon with horse.Thus, in a weapon with foot, the senior corporal, the sergeant and the staff sergeant have ranks of gilded color. The adjudant carries and the regimental sergeant major carries.
In the same way, a lieutenant-colonel carries in the weapons to foot, whereas it carries in the weapons to horse.
