Armorial bearings of the island of Man

The armorial bearings of the island of Man , form long official armorial bearings of Its Majesty in force in the island of Man (in English Arms off Her Majesty in right off the Isle off Man ), are comings into effect the July 12th 1996.

These armorial bearings are composed of a ecu central taking again the triskèle and the red of the Drapeau of the island of Man, surmounted by the British Couronne, framed by a Peregrine falcon on the left and a corbel on the right, the whole resting on the currency of the Latin archipelago in registered on a ribbon: Quocunque Jeceris Stabit .

Description into heraldic of the armorial bearings is the following one:

Mouths with a triquètre armed with money, with the edgings, spurs and knuckles of gold. Stamped of an imperial crown to the naturalness. Supported with dextral by a peregrine falcon and sinistral by a corbel both with the naturalness. Currency: Quocunque Jeceris Stabit

The presence of a Peregrine falcon goes back to the 15th century: in 1405, the king of England Henry {{IV}} yields the archipelago to Sir John Stanley under condition of paying to him homage to him and each future sovereign of England the day of crowning by offering two peregrine falcons. The descendants of Sir John Stanley reign on the archipelago during 360 years under the title of Seigneur of Man until the king Georges {{III}} does not recover this title in 1765 but the gift in the form of two falcons will perdura until the crowning of George {{IV}} in 1822.

The corbel is as for him an animal of Superstition S and many place names refer there. The corbel constitutes also a heritage of the presence Viking on the island because according to the Scandinavian Mythologie, the god Odin is accompanied by two corbels. A drakkar Viking, operation by a crew made up of Norwegians and Mannois at the time of a voyage between the Norway and the island of Man in 1979, bears the name of Corbeau of Odin .

The British Couronne refers to the sovereign of the United Kingdom which is also lord of Man.

The currency, associated with the island of Man since 1300, is written in Latin “ Quocunque Jeceris Stabit ” and literally means Where that you throw it, there will remain upright. This currency is in the beginning that of the territories under the control of the Clan MacLeod (originating in the Scottish island Lewis): the islands Hébrides then the island of Man starting from 1266.
