Armidale
Armidale (: 24749 inhabitants) is a city (" city") of News-Wales of the South in Australia located halfway between Sydney in the South and Brisbane in North. The city owes its name at the town of Armadale on the island of Skye, in Scotland.
Localization
The city is located at 1000 m of altitude, on the Northern tablelands, a plate of the Great Dividing Range.
Towards the East, one finds valleys wooded communicating with the plain coastal and separate between them by granitic with the poor vegetation or basaltic plates and much more fertile.
Towards the West, there are soft covered hills of meadows or Bush
The area has a great number of zones of a great beauty and an important scientific interest of which several parks classified with the world heritage of Humanity like the New England National Park, the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park and the Mount Yarrowyck Nature Reserve.
History
The area was inhabited by the " Aniwan" , a population aboriginal.
The first European colonists settled in the area with the beginning of the year 1830 shortly after the exploration of the area by John Oxley. At the beginning, it was the point of meeting of the farmers of the area then the discovery of gold mines (" Rocky river" and " Gorges" parked;) in the area in 1850 the urban development supported.
Climate
The altitude of the city enables him to profit from a soft climate with, in summer, a bearable heat (average maximum temperature in summer: 20.3°C), one spring and of an autumn marked well and a short and cold winter with 2 or 3 days of snow per annum. Pluviometry is of 800 mm per annum. The city knew during the ten last years three tornadoes (September 29th, 1996, January 1st, 2001 and December 21st, 2006) which made damage in the city.
Connections
Coffs Harbor on the east coast at two hours of car by Dorrigo and Bellingen on the Bellinger To rivet.
Armidale is the terminus of the railway of the Northern Railway which connects it directly to Sydney.
The city has also an airport with daily connections towards Sydney with sometimes stopover with Tamworth.
