Armenian apostolic Church

The Armenian apostolic Église is an Eastern orthodoxe Church autocéphale. It belongs to the whole of the Églises of the three councils. The supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all the Armenians which resides at Etchmiadzin close to Erevan profits from a primacy of honor among the different hiérarques ones (current holder: Garéguine II since the October 27th 1999).

History

The foundation of the Armenian apostolic Church is traditionally allotted to the apostles Thaddée and Barthélémy. It has just celebrated, in 2001, its 1700e birthday which makes the first Church of the History of it.

1963 Reconciliation in Jerusalem of the catholicossats of Etchmiadzin and Cilicie (first meeting since 1651).

This Church professes the Miaphysisme, an alternative of monophysime, which was condemned by the Concile of Chalcédoine.

Organization

The Armenian Church is divided into four entities: two catholicossats autonomous and two secondary patriarchates. However the supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all the Armenians which sits at Etchmiadzin enjoy a primacy of honor.

Small the catholicossat of Aghtamar as for him disappeared in 1895.

Relations with the other Churches

Relations with the orthodoxe Churches

  • transitory Unions with the Church of Constantinople during the 7th century. Other unfruitful attempts at unions at the 9th century and the 12th century.

Relations with the Roman Catholic church

  • transitory Union with the Church of Rome in 1198.

Oudis and Tats

The national character of the Armenian Church is very strong and it was a long time the principal institution of the Armenian people. There is thus historically quasi an identity between the Armenian people and his Church.

Two small Christian communities of the the Caucasus belong however to the Armenian apostolic Church, the Oudis in their very great majority and a minority of the Tats. They are regarded as the heiresses of old the Église of Aghbanie.
