Armed Launis
Armas Launis (1884 Hämeenlinna - 1959 Nice) is a Compositeur, ethno-musicologist, pedagog, writer and journalist Finnish.
The type-setter
Primarily type-setter of operas, the repertory of Launis counts ten of them (booklet and music). Among them, were played:
- In Finland:
- in scenic version " Seven frères" (1913), first Finnish comic opera and " Kullervo" (1917);
- in version concert" Aslak Hetta" (2004 - Finlandia-direction Sakari Oramo).
- In France
- " Kullervo" in version scenic (1940 in Nice with the Palate of the Mediterranean) and broadcast on Paris-Inter and Radio operator Monte Carlo (1938 - 1940).
- " Jéhudith" in shortened version, was given to the radio (Paris-Inter-1954).
Also one will retain compositions of chamber music, cantatas, choruses, continuations for orchestra and the music of first ethnographic film Finnish " A marriage in Karelia, country of poetry " (1921).
The ethno-musicologist
Launis is one of the first researchers - collectors of popular music. Solitary and impassioned traveller, curious spirit, to the listening of the others, it went to Lapland (1904-1905-1922), in Kainu (1902), in Ingrie (1903-1906), in Karelia (1902-1905), in Estonia (1930). Everywhere it met the inhabitants lengthily, listened to them, foot-note the melodies will.enregistra also famous singers, the whining ones, players of kantele. Launis included/understood the richness and the dynamism of sung poetry, the importance of the popular culture. The many publications, the whole of its collections still make authority today and enrich the national heritage.
Later, he travelled and remained in North Africa, being interested in the musics Berber Bedouins, Arabic and who will renew the color of his music (the operas Théodora and Jéhudith).
The pedagog
Arts doctor (1911), qualified schoolteacher, it teaches 1915 with 1922 the musical analysis and the composition with the Université of Helsinki. It perfect its studies with Berlin (Wilhelm Klatte) and with Weimar (Waldemar von Baussnern).
Concerned of musical teaching for all, it founded the first popular academies of Finland, which exist still today. It directed them until in 1930.
As of 1920, it is pensioned with life by the Finnish State with the possibility of living abroad.
The journalist
Anxious to keep the contact with its fatherland, it is corresponding regular of Helsingin Sanomat, Uusi Suomi and Suomen Kuvalehti, founding member of the Company of the foreign press of the Riviera, journalist to the French Association of expansion and artistic exchanges.
Definitively installed in France, in Nice since 1930, it took an active part in the musical and cultural exchanges between France and Finland.
