Armand Gauthier

Elzear Gauthier usually indicated under the name of Armand Gauthier of the Aude was born with Fitou (Aude) the September 28th 1850, deceased with Paris the May 10th 1926.

He studies with the imperial college of Carcassonne with the future Joffre Marshal, made medicine in Montpellier and settles with Sigean. Its devotion near the populations of Spanish origin at the time of the epidemic of Choléra of 1885 made of him a recognized character. In 1881, it is elected Maire of Sigean, functions which it will occupy on several occasions.

In 1886, it is elected at the General advice of the Aude. It will represent the canton of Sigean there during 40 years. It will occupy the presidency of this assembly of 1901 with 1902, of 1905 with 1906 and of 1908 with 1921. In 1894, it is elected senator of the Aude, it will remain it until in 1921. It there will be rapporteur of the budget and committee of supply and will take an active share with the creation of the Income tax. It sits in the group of the Democratic Left at the sides of the Louis Barthou, Henri Poincaré, Maurice Rouvier, Joseph Caillaux

He votes the law of 1901 on associations and the law of 1905 on the separation of the Church and the State. At the time of the vote of this law, it belongs to the Ministère Rouvier in the capacity as Minister for Labor Publics. We find it Ministre for the Navy in 1914 in the cabinets Doumergue and Viviani. It gives its resignation the August 3rd 1914.
