A very political bishop
After the fastening of Strasbourg and part of the Alsace in France in 1681, Louis XIV wants to place a French prelate in a province considered faithful to the Protestantisme and the German language. It chooses an young man of the nobility, Gaston de Rohan-Soubise, who is only sixteen years old when it makes it enter into 1690 within the chapter of the Chanoine S of the cathedral of Strasbourg.
The Innocent pope XII, interested by this work of proselytism, creates a post of bishop Coadjuteur in Strasbourg. The joint pressures of king de France and the pope, as well as generosities of Anne of Rohan-Chub, mother of Gaston, end up convincing the canons: one applicant at the station, it is elected unanimously, then becomes bishop at thirty years with died of M {{gr.}} of Furstenberg.
The task which awaits it then is immense. The worship Catholique is indeed restored with the cathedral only since 1681, to replace the worship Luthérien, established following a municipal decision of 1529). It will thus rest on the Jésuite S, arrived in the city since 1683, to form a new generation of priests intended to replace the Protestant pastors trained in the German universities. It will also stick to its mission of francizing a population whose royal administration denounces “the language, manners, the German and republican habits. ”
Its succession will be taken by its great nephew Armand de Rohan-Soubise, who his was initially protected then his coadjutor, and who will continue this mission.
A bishop manufacturer

After the fire of the episcopal castle in 1709, Gaston makes it renovate by a famous architect of the time: Robert de Cotte. The building site will last until 1723 and the castle will be also richly redécoré with tapestries, furniture and tables come from Paris.
