Armand-Jerome Bignon (October 21st 1711 with Paris - March 8th 1772 in Paris) is a French lawyer, librarian of the king and to advise State, nephew of Jean-Paul Bignon.

Biography

Lord of the Beautiful Island and Hardricourt, he is prosecuting attorney with the Grand the Council in 1729, Maître of the requests of Soissons in 1737 and govern the Large Council in 1738.

In 1743, with died of his/her brother, itself successor of his uncle Jean-Paul Bignon, it is named librarian of the king. It dislocated itself of it in 1770 in favor of his son Jerome-Frederic.

He is elected member of the French Academy in 1743 and of the Académie of the Inscriptions in 1751. It is named to advise of State in 1762 and Prévôt of the merchants of Paris in 1764. It was the Dupuy scientist who pronounced his praise.

Armand-Jerome Bignon left a not very honourable memory; he was Prévôt of the merchants of Paris at the time of the marriage of the Dauphin and of Marie-Antoinette, in May 1770. It was mainly with its incurie that one had the annoying accidents which announced the moment of the fireworks and which cost the life more than three hundred people, without counting to a number much more significant casualties. Any Paris was made indignant to see it, three days after this disaster, to show itself in its cabin with the Opera.

Under Louis XIII, the provost of the merchants of Paris and the first two aldermen had been condemn to a fine not to have taken care of a bridge whose collapse caused the death of four where five people. Under Louis XV, the faults born of improvidence were never punished. Paris was avenged by witty remarks for Armand-Jerome Bignon: the anagram of his names was thus made. Ibi not rem, damna gero (I do not make the good, I make the evil).

Armand-Jerome Bignon forever nothing published, but it left memories containing the account of a voyage in Spain and Italy and whose manuscript is preserved at the National library of France.
