Armance
Armance or some scenes of a living room of Paris (published without name of author in 1827) is the first novel of Stendhal . The young girl, pretty but atypical, is loved of the hero, the young person and atypical Octave which is silent all the same and brilliance. They like but there is a problem. Problem of size, or rather of not-size if you want my opinion. Because Octave hiding place a heavy secrecy:
“Yes dear friend, says him it by looking at it finally, I adore you, you does not doubt my love; but which is the man who adores you? it is a monster. ” A series of indices can let think that this dear Octave is impotent, following a rather serious accident. Octave is in prey has a deep interior distress, it illustrates with him only the " badly siècle" the romantic ones.
Armance is based on the topic of Olivier of the duchess Claire of Lasted, whose embarrassing character had prohibited the publication. But Stendhal, very fine as with its practice (this is not ironic), knew very discreetly to infuse the secrecy without never in speaking openly. Moreover the author his own book with the duchess will accredit. One can think that the fact of knowing the secrecy of Octave is enough to clear up and thus to remove the interest of the book. André Gide regarded this novel as most beautiful of the novels of Stendhal.
