Arm-Panon

Arm-Panon is a common French, located in the department and the area of the Meeting.

Its inhabitants is called Panonnais.

Geography

The communal territory is delimited by the Rivière of the Mast in north, the Indian Ocean in the east, the Rivière of the Rocks in the south and the rampart separating the Forêt from the Plain of the Lianas of the forests of Bébour and Bélouve in the west.

The communes bordering are Saint-Andrew, Saint-Benoît and Salazie.

The name of the commune comes from an affluent of the Rivière of the Rocks which crossed the field of the one of the most former réunionnaises families, Panon-Desbassyns, influential on all the island with.

History

As a concession intended for the culture of the coffee, Arm-Panon appears only in 1725. In the middle of the 19th century, the district which was created there is attached administratively to Saint-Benoît. It separates from it while becoming common in 1882.

In spite of several land dismemberments, the common residence ground of great landowners.

Demography

Arm-Panon is a multipolarized Commune. It is only island with Small-Island and Three-Basins.

Infrastructures

One finds on the communal territory a public college, the college of Arm-Panon. One in addition finds there a public of mainstream education and technological college, the college of Arm-Panon, which counted 689 pupils with the re-entry 2005.

Economy

The commune is important producing of Vanille. It organizes each year in May important a Foire agricultural, undoubtedly most important of the island.
