Arménie mother

Mother Arménie (in Armenian: ՄայրՀայաստան - Mayr Hayastan ) is a monument located in the park of the Victoire at Erevan, in Arménie.

History

Under the reign of Stalin during the Soviet Union, Grigor Haroutounian, first secretary of the central committee of the Armenian Communist party, and the members of the government of then make build a giant monument with the glory of the dictator. The statue was carved by Sergueï Merkurov and the construction of the base entrusted to the architect Raphaël Israëlian. This last thinking that a statue was not which a temporary honor draws for base a monument as important only the statue as it carries. The base is built like a church (at least interior), taking as a starting point the church Sainte Hripsime of Etchmiadzin. The monument is inaugurated on November 29th, 1950.

The prediction of Israëlian proves to be true when with dead of the Soviet leader, the statue is quickly dismounted by people having suffered from a particularly hard political regime. It is replaced in 1967 by the current statue carved by Ara Haroutyounian.

Characteristics

The strategic situation of the monument in the Park of the Victoire, on one of the hills of Erevan, gives truly the feeling that the Arménie Mother takes care on all the city. It occupies a surface of 3.000 m ² in the middle of this large park erevanais.

The 36 height meters base shelters a museum on 5 stages, the museum of the ministry for Defense. It is mainly devoted to the heroism of the 600.000 Armenians having taken part in the Second world war and of the soldiers of the Guerre of Haut-Karabagh. The statue, smaller, fact 24 meters in height.
