Arlberg-Kandahar
The Arlberg-Kandahar ( AK ) is a mythical test of the history of the Alpine skiing.
It is at the origin of the recognition of the Alpine skiing by the International federation of Ski.
Origin of the name
The name Arlberg-Kandahar has two origins:-
Arlberg in reference in the name of an Austrian collar close to Sankt Anton, where the Austrian school of ski invented a technique of ski.
-
Kandahar of the name of a general English Sir Roberts off Kandahar which occupied Kandahar (Afghanistan) and became vice-president of the Public School Alpine Sports Club.
Arnold Lunn off organizes on January 7th 1911 the Challenge Roberts Kandahar with Montana, known like the first descent of the history of the Alpine skiing, and makes dispute on January 6th 1922 the first slalom (" race in S" in Norwegian) with Mürren.
January 30th 1924, it founds the Kandahar Ski Club to ensure the promotion of the compound descent and slalom. The same year, the first Winter Olympics are disputed with Chamonix and the International federation of Ski is created. Influenced by the Scandinavians and defending the Scandinavian disciplines, it is opposed to the recognition slalom and downhill races.
Arnold Lunn joins then the Ski Club of Arlberg and Hannes Schneider, the inventor of the technique of Arlberg, to create the test of Arlberg-Kandahar (name of both Ski Club), a compound descent-slalom. The first AK is disputed in March 1928 with Sankt Anton. Vis-a-vis the success of this test, DID it integrates in February 1930 at the time of the congress of Oslo in its payments the slalom and downhill races.
History of the competition

Then, the test proceeded starting from 1931 alternatively between the Austrian station and the Swiss station of Mürren.Cancelled in 1938 because of the Anschluss (the test was to dispute in Sankt Anton) then stopped during the Second world war, the AK began again in 1947 with Mürren. New stations were then built-in the organization: Chamonix in 1948, Sestrières in 1951 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1954.
This competition proceeded apart from the aegis of the International federation of Ski but was an annual appointment very snuffed better skiers of the time. After the Olympic Games and the championships of the world, it was the third most prestigious test. The great names of the Alpine skiing appear in its prize list.
With creation in 1967 of the world cup of ski, which incorporated it in its program, the test lost of its original spirit and its glare. Of 1981 with 1993, it had there nothing any more but Garmisch and Sankt Anton for accueillier the AK. Chamonix took again the organization in 1994.
