The Arizona (“small Source” as an Indian) is the 48e State of the the United States. Located in the south-west of the country, it is bordered by the California, the Nevada, the Utah, the New Mexico and the states Mexican of Low-California and Sonora. It is one of the four States of the Four Corners and belonged to the Sun Belt (or “sun girdles”) which knows a demographic strong growth.

History

The Amerindian S were the first inhabitants of the area. Certain cultures are extinct and left archaeological vestiges like the Sinagua, in the area of Sedona. Arizona was explored by Marcos de Niza in 1539. The father Eusebio Kino established there Christian schools in the last years of the 17th century and the first years of the 18th century. The Spain exerted there its colonial power until the independence of Mexico in 1821. The the United States took Arizona in Mexico after the américano-Mexican Guerre in 1848. Geography

Of a surface of 295  260 km ², Arizona are populated of 5  130  632 inhabitants (2000). The State is known for its desert landscapes rich in plants Xérophyte S like the Cactus, and its climate which presents very hot summers and winters soft. But Arizona is also composed of the Plateau of Colorado and its forests of pine, in the portion north-center of the state. Like the other states of south-west, Arizona is an area with the broken relief, of which more half of the surface is made up of mountains and plates; whose formation goes back to prehistoric volcanicity.

The principal rivers are the Colorado, river which dug the Large Canyon, the Gila and the Salt River.

The capital of Arizona east Phoenix. The other important cities are Tucson, Mesa, and Flagstaff. The state is divided into 15 counties.

In 2006, Arizona has a population estimated at: 6166318 inhabitants, which represents an increase in: 213311 inhabitants, is 3,6%, compared to the previous year; and an increase in: 1035686 people, is 20,2%, since the year 2000. Internal immigration with the the United States represents: 541283 people, the immigrants coming from other countries represent: 204661 people.

Since the Years 1960 of many pensioners of the Midwest and the North-East retirement settle in Arizona in the communities , of the cities especially designed for their needs, like Sun City.

Arizona is a moderate State of the west and republican tradition .

At the local level, it includes/understands a Senate of 30 elected officials and a Room of the representatives of 60 elected officials, all elected for two years renewable. Since 1950, these two Assemblies are dominated by the Republican party.

The governor of Arizona east elected for four years. Since 2003, the governor is the democratic Janet Napolitano. Separately the Attorney General, all the other elected stations of the executive are held by republicans.

In 2005, at the federal level, the two senators of the state are the republicans John McCain (succeeding the ultra-conservative Barry Goldwater) and Jon Kyl. Six of the eight elected officials to the Chambre of the Representatives of the United States are republicans.

At the time of the presidential elections, since 1952, Arizona always voted for the republican candidates except for the year 1996 when the voters placed at the head the democrat Bill Clinton with 46,52% front the republican Bob Dole (44,30%) handicapped by the good score carried out by the populist one of right-hand side Ross Perot (8%). In 1964, Arizona is one of the rare States to vote for the republican conservative Barry Goldwater, it is true senator of Arizona. In 2004, Arizona voted to 54,83% for George W. Bush against 44,37% with John Kerry.
