Aristophane de Byzance

Aristophane de Byzance , in Greek old Ἀριστοφάνης / Aristophanes (Byzance v. -257 - Alexandria v. -180), grammairien and critical Greek.

Born towards -257, it leaves for Alexandria during its youth, and becomes there disciple of Zénodote and Callimaque de Cyrène. It is devoted to the Homeric poems, of which it gives the first truly critical edition, and to works of Hésiode, Alcée, Pindare, Sophocle, Euripide, Aristophane or Ménandre, for which it writes introductions. He is also the author of a Lexique containing words antiquated and usual, usual Synonyme S, texts, etc Following Apollonios of Rhodos and Ératosthène, he takes the head of the Bibliothèque of Alexandria in -195. One allots to him the development of the Diacritiques of the Greek alphabet.

It was eclipsed by its disciple, Aristarque de Samothrace, but the Antiquité saw in him one of its best grammairiens.
