Arioso
In Classical music, a arioso , is a Musical genre for voice of Soliste, which occupies the intermediate place between the Récitatif, of narrative nature, and the Aria, purely musical. Just like the latter, the arioso was born during the 16th century, at the same time as the accompanied monodie and the opera, of which it is indissociable. It is employed, not only in the lyric art, but also in any musical genre concerned with the account or the course of a dramatic action - Cantate, Oratorio, etc It approaches the recitativo accompagnato, with which it is frequently confused.

In the Magic Flute of Mozart, at the beginning of the finale of the first act, the andante of the priest ( Sprecher ) “ Sobald dich führt of Freundschaft Hand ins Heiligtum zum ew' gen Band ” is an example of arioso.
-
the arioso is connected with récitatif by its free structure and its inflections, close to the word; it is characterized some however by its rate/rhythm, regularly measured. The arioso is connected with the aria by its melody characteristics - the sentences are often more singing that in the simple récitatif one -; it is characterized some however by its form which generally does not have recourse to the process of the repetition: one does not distinguish there from true “topic”.
-
In a musical composition, the arioso can constitute an independent number - for example, a part succeeding récitatif and preceding an air. It also can, the space of some measurements, to form part of more developed structure - récitatif, an aria, a chorus, or an unspecified unit.
-
During the 19th century, whereas the Compositeur S of opera gradually give up the strict forms (aria da capo) as well as alternation “récitatif-air”, and are forwarded to the “infinite melody” - whose Wagnerian opera is a notorious example -, the model of the arioso will play a leading role.
