Biography

Born with Méthymne, in the island of Lesbos, he lives a long time at the court of Périandre, Tyran of Corinthe, before travelling in Sicily and Italy. Hérodote tells that it piles up great richnesses there and that with its return, the sailors decide to kill it to divide its goods. To thank the gods, Arion then offers a bronze statue representing a man on a dolphin, rules that Pausanias sees at the time of its visit of Ténare. According to the Roman grammairien Plaster filling, the statue is in a temple devoted to Arion and comprises an inscription specifying that the anecdote takes seat at the time of the 29e Olympiade, the year when Arion gains the sicilian plays.
