Ariel Toaff is professor of history to the Université Bar Ilan. Wire of the former Large-Rabbi of Rome Elio Toaff, and specialist in the History of the Jews in Italy, it is mainly known in Occident for its book published in February 2007, entitled Pasque di sangue: Ebrei d' Europa E omicidi rituali ( in Passovers off blood: The Jews off Europe and Ritual Murders '') which treats charge of crimes of blood carried against the Jews.

According to the reports/ratios of press, it estimates in this book that certain Christian children could have been killed by “a minority of fundamentalist Jews of origin Ashkénaze”. It quotes descriptions therapeutic kabbalists of uses of blood and thinks that “a black-market flowered on the two sides of the Alps, with the Jewish intermediaries selling of human blood carrying the rabbinical certification of the product - kosher blood”.

A former president of the Union of the Italian Jewish communities, Dr. Amos Luzzatto said: “I would expect something of more serious than “that could have been true. ” It also expressed its consternation in front of the sensationnalism with which the Corriere beyond Will be , principal daily newspaper of Italy, treated the question.

“It is completely absurd to use declarations torn off under torture a few centuries ago to rebuild historical theses strange and tortuous” twelve of the chief rabbis of Italy in a press release declared where they refute the theses of Toaff.

“The only blood which was versed in these stories was that of so many innocent Jews, massacred because of charges unjust and infamous” one in the continuation of the declaration reads.

The town of Thirty, close to the Austrian border, commemorated the “martyrdom” of small the Simon during five centuries, until the publication by the Vatican into 1965 of Nostra Aetate , document founder of the contemporary interreligieux dialog ( the Concile encourages the recognition and the mutual regard between Jews and Christians. ). The bishop of Thirty signed a decree which recognizes that the charge of crimes of blood against the Jews of this city was without base.

A meticulous refutation including/understanding of the interviews of the principal Italian scholars appeared on February 11th, 2007 in the Italian newspaper Corriere beyond Will be .

February 14th, 2007, Ariel Toaff declared that he had asked the Italian editor of his book to stop the distribution immediately of it so that he could “re-examine the passages on which the distortions and the untruths rest which were published in the mass media”. In an interview for Haaretz Toaff said: “on several dozen pages I proved the centrality of blood for Passover”. “By basing me on many sermons, I concluded that blood had been used, especially by the Jews ashkénazes and that one was convinced of the special curative capacities of the blood of the children. It is a fact that among the remedies of the Jews ashkénazes there were powders made with blood”. The article also declares that: “although the use of blood was prohibited by the Jewish law, Toaff says that it found the proof of a rabbinical permission to use blood, even human blood. " The Rabbin S allowed it on the one hand because blood was already dried, and on the other hand because in the communities ashkénazes it was a received habit and which had taken force of loi" ”.
