Ariel (in Hebrew: אֲרִיאֵל) is an Israeli city located in the mountains of Samarie.

Etymology

“Ariel” means the lion of God . The Prophète Isaïe uses this name to evoke Jerusalem and its Temple.

History

The city was based by a group of laic pioneers in 1978 on the strategic road carrying out of the Jordan to Tel-Aviv.

Population

The population, primarily laic, is approximately 18.000 people in 2006, of which 7.000 are immigrants originating in the old Soviet countries.

Economy

The city has two zones Industrie which guarantee its economic development.

Education

The ambitionne city to become a University residence. It shelters the college of Judaea-Samarie in the process of becoming a university following a decision of the Israeli government in 2005. Nearly 10.000 students are registered there in 2005.
