Ariarathe Ier

Ariarathe Ier is the satrap of Cappadoce since the reign of Artaxerxès III (358 with 338 av. J. - C.) until the reign of Darius III (336 with 330). It is overcome and killed by Perdiccas in 322; its satrapie is occupied by Eumène de Cardia.

Wire of the preceding satrap, Ariamne Ier, Ariarathe is a Persian dynaste and not Cappadocien like writes sometimes. Its capacity was strengthened with the end of the Achéménides. Occupied to continue Darius III in Cilicie, Alexandre indeed forsakes Cappadoce of which it receives only one formal tender in 333. The authority of the designated satraps (Sabitkas then Abistaménès) is indeed very theoretical. Ariarathe is made proclaim king de Cappadoce in 331 and does not seem to have paid tribute with Alexandre.

At the time of the division of Babylon in 323, Ariarathe is hardly laid out to give up Cappadoce and raises an army. Perdiccas leads the war to the profit of Eumène de Cardia and installs it with the head of the satrapie. Captured, Ariarathe dies torture victim at the 82 years age in 322: it is put in cross according to the sentence that Achéménides hold to the rebels. He is the adoptive father of Ariarathe II, the son of his Holopherne brother.
