Argentia

Argentia is a village of the Canada, located in the province of Ground-New-and-Labrador. In the beginning a small village of fishermen named Little Placentia , Argentia was re-elected in 1904, because of its proximity with a money mine.

The first church and school were built in 1831 and 1832 respectively, by the Father Pelagius Nowlan, an Irish prètre. In 1836 the population was of 484 inhabitants, divided in 76 hearths. In 2001, the population rose with 450 inhabitants.

Destruction of the village

Argentia was selected in 1940 as site of a news naval Base American, within the framework of the lease-lend with the United Kingdom. By arrangement with Canada, the inhabitants were expropriés and the majority were reinstalled in the villages close to Freshwater and Placentia.

The naval base was occupied until in 1994 by American forces, and the site restored in Canada.
