Arette is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.
Its inhabitants is called Arettois.
Geography
The commune of Arette belongs to the Arrondissement of Oloron-Holy-Marie and belonged to the Canton of Aramits which counts six communes: Ance, Aramits, Arette, Féas, Issor and Lanne-in-Barétous.This village is located in the Vallée of Barétous between the Vallée of Winder at the east and the Soule at the west (one of the provinces of the Basque Country French). Located at the borders of the Béarn, it is in contact with the Basque Country and of the Spain, and includes/understands the station of altitude of Pierre Saint Martin's day.
With its 9.223 hectares, it is a very vast commune of mountain. It culminates with 2.315 meters of altitude in Soum de Couy near the Pic of Annie (2 504 m), not highest in the west of the Pyrenean chain and which extends on both sides from the Vert of Arette on a score of kilometers until the bottom of the valley, where one finds the borough old of Arette to the dimension 316 Mr.
The south of the commune, the Spanish border and the Vallée of Roncal (in particular the commune of Isaba) allow increasingly important international exchanges.

Toponymy
The toponym Arette appears in the forms Areta (1186, titles of Barcelona), Rete (1383, contract of Luntz), Arete (1385, cencier of Béarn), Erete (1440, titles of the valley of Barétous), Aretha and Eretha (1444, payments of the Court Majour de Béarn), Hereta (1538, reformation of Béarn).The toponym comes from the Basque rear (= stone) and from the rental suffix - eta, which means stony place .
History
In 1385, Arette counted 87 fires and depended on the Bailliage of Oloron.August 13rd, 1967, the village of Arette is partially destroyed by a Séisme which killed a person.

The commune is located on the way of the 16th stage of the Tour de France 2007 which will take place on July 25th. The course of 218 kilometers will connect Orthez to Gourette - Collar of Aubisque.
