Arentèle

The Arentèle is a French river of Lorraine which runs in the department of the the Vosges. It is an affluent of the Mortagne, therefore a tributary of a tributary of the the Rhine by Mortagne, the Meurthe then the the Moselle.

Geography

Arentèle is born with the foot from the hill from Avison with Bruyères and joined the Mortagne with Rambervillers.

It sprinkles in particular Grandvillers and Sainte-Hélène.

Hydrology

Arentèle was observed during one 17 years period (1991-2007), at the hydrometric station of Saint-Gorgon, locality of the department of the the Vosges located little before its confluence with the Mortagne. Surface thus studied is of 63,2 km ², that is to say it quasi totality of the catchment area of the river which makes 65,2 km ².

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Saint-Gorgon is of 0,707 m ³ a second.

Arentèle presents seasonal fluctuations of flow marked well. The high waters are held in winter and are characterized by average monthly flows going from 1,11 to 1,23 m ³ a second, from December to March included (with an in January maximum). From April, the flow drops quickly to the low waters of summer which take place from July to September included, involving a fall of the average flow monthly up to 0,234 m ³ in August, which remains however rather consistent. But these monthly averages are only averages and hide more marked fluctuations over short periods or according to the years.

With the low water levels, the VCN3 can fall until 0,088 m ³ a second (88 liters), in the event of dry period quinquennial, which cannot be described as severe for such a small river (see note).

As for the risings, they can be rather important, taking into account the smallness of the catchment area. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 are worth respectively 11 and 14 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 16 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 18 m ³, while the QIX 50 not calculated fault one duration of sufficient observation, but is estimated at more or less 20 m ³ a second (see note).

The recorded maximum instantaneous flow with Saint-Gorgon was of 16,1 m ³ a second on November 12th, 1996, while the value maximum day laborer was of 12,4 m ³ a second on September 18th, 2006. If one compares the first of these values on a QIX scale of the river, one notes that this rising was of a decennial nature, and thus extremely banal, because intended to repeat itself every 10 years on average.

Arentèle is a relatively abundant river. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 354 millimetres annually, which is higher than the overall average of France. It is however definitely lower than the basins of the Meurthe (425 millimetres) and of the Mortagne (372 millimetres), like with the average of the French basin of the the Moselle (445 millimetres with Hauconcourt downstream from Metz). The specific Flow (or Qsp) reached the rather solid figure of 11,2 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.
