They are currently 11, since the creation of the area of Matam in 2001.A bill of May 2007 envisages the nearest creation of three new areas: Sédhiou (southern), Kaffrine (center) and Kédougou (south-eastern), which would change to 14 the number of administrative areas in the country and would reduce the extent of the Région of Tambacounda, vastest of all.
