Areas of Finland

The Finland account 20 areas (or districts), maakunta in Finnish, landskap in Swedish. This administrative level results from the reform of 1997.

The areas are controlled by district councils. They are gathered in Provinces. More than the provinces, vast administrative extents without true coherence, it is this level which best sticks to the feeling membership of the Finns. Indeed, these areas have borders which correspond largely to old the historical provinces and with their principal subdivisions.

The areas work as regards employment, of economic development, education, environment and in other regionalized administrative sectors of the Finnish State. They are decentralized administrations of the State and generally do not have a political autonomy.
