Area of Chūgoku

The area of Chūgoku (中国地方, Chūgoku-chihō ) is located at the western end of Honshū, the principal island of the Japan. It is bordered in the east by the Région of Kansai.

History

Chūgoku means literally the Country of the Medium. This denomination refers to old divisions of Japan: one distinguished the Close Pays (近国, Kingoku ), the Pays of the Medium and the Remote Pays (遠国, Ongoku ), in reference to the distance which separated them from the old capitals (Nara or Kyōto according to the time.)

In a strict way, current Chūgoku covers only the Pays of the Medium of the west of Kyōto, along the roads of Sanindo (山陰道) and Sanyodo (山陽道).

In Japanese, the Kanji 中国 and the reading Chūgoku are also used to indicate the China. The same characters are used in Chinese but marked Zhōngguó .

To avoid confusing the area of Chūgoku with China, the area is also called Région of San' in-San' yō. San' in is the northern part, vis-a-vis the Mer of Japan, i.e. “the dark side of the mountain”. San' yō , “the enlightened side of the mountain”, is the southern part, facing the Inland sea of Seto. These names draw their origins from the differences in climate marked between the two.
