Ardakan
Ardakan اردکان is the second most important city of the Province of Yazd in Iran. It has a population estimated at 61.596 inhabitants in 2006 .Elle was founded at the 12th century in the area of Zardug , which is a zone with the dry and desert climate.
The word " Ardakan" in Persan means " saint" place; or " propre" place; (Persan modern: ardak+an /Average Persan: artak+an ). The city has many places or historical religious monuments: The large mosque of Ardakan (Masjed-e Jame'), the Zire-deh mosque, Imamzadeh Mir Seyyed Mohammad, Tekiyeh of the Bazaar nine,…
The area around the city is also one of the centers of the Zoroastrisme in Iran, and there exist many holy places for the zoroastriens in the village of Sharif-Abad, close to Ardakan. Each year, in summer, of the thousands of zoroastriens of the whole world find themselves in the area for pilgrimages.
The most important site zoroastrien is Pir-e Sabz Chak Chak. The other mausoleums are: Pir Shah Eshtad Izad, Pir Shah Tashtar Izad, Pir Shah Mehr Izad and Pir Morad Shah.
Ardakan is the birthplace of the former Iranian president, Mohammad Khatami.
