Arda

In the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, Arda is the name of the imaginary world created by Eru Ilúvatar and in which will be held the history of the Ground of the Medium during its different ages. The significance of Arda is “Kingdom” in Quenya (one can note the similarity of this name with Erde , who means “German Ground”).

Arda is in fact the Earth, created by the Classical music, so called Ainulindalë. Its form changed well since this time, inter alia because of the wars against Melkor.

Arda was punt in the beginning and was encircled by the External Sea called Ekkaia. It included/understood moreover one continent where the Valar lived, but Melkor is established secretly in north, digging the fortress of Utumno. One of the first upheavals of Arda was the attack of Melkor against the two Lamps, Illuin and Ormal, creating oceans and mountains. Valar thus took refuge in Aman, behind the Pelóri, more the high mountains of Arda, in the west of the Grande Sea, giving up the Ground of the Medium.

What justified Valar to make the war with Melkor was the awakening of the Elfe S. Là still, the geography of Arda changed, giving to the Earth Medium, the central continent, the form which one knows at the end of the Years of the Trees and during the First Age. At the end of this age, the war of the Great Anger modified the relief of Arda once again: the Beleriand, area of the west of the Earth of the Medium, was submerged.

At the beginning of the Second Age, the large island of Númenor, emerged in the middle of the sea and was offered to the Men who had fought at the sides of the Elves against Melkor. The end of this age was the ultimate change of Arda. Its cause was the invasion of Aman by the Númenóréens, pulled by their pride and cunningly handled by Sauron. Eru Ilúvatar then absorbs Númenor under water and the continent of Aman was withdrawn from the Circles of the World, maintaining only accessible for the boats elfic. Arda thus took a spherical form such as we know it today.
