Arcos de Valdevez

Arcos de Valdevez is a municipality (in Portuguese: concelho or município ) of the Portugal, located in the District of Viana C Castelo and the Northern area. It is crossed by Rio Vez.

Geography

Arcos de Valdevez is bordering:
  • in north, of Monção,
  • in the North-East, of Melgaço,
  • in the east, of the Spain,
  • in the south, of Laying da Barca,
  • in south-west, of Laying of Lima,
  • in the west, of Paredes de Coura.

History

Arcos de Valdevez was the place of a tournament against Léonais in 1140 and one victory of the Portuguese and Afonso Henrique. It was undoubtedly a first step towards the treaty of Zamora and the independence of Portugal in 1143. During the medieval period, there are several times reorganized of the tournaments, but without policy issue, as that of 1140 which replaced a traditional battle.

The city comprises several monuments (especially ecclesiastical) but so military with “  O castelo of giela  ”, an old military reserve now left with the abandonment.

Sport and culture

Culturally and sportivement the city is very active. Indeed, the clubs of various and varied sports multiply and the village f4etes do not amount. These festivals are at the same time balls, religious holidays (with masses and processions) and of the cultural festivals (with the groups of folk dance “  rancho  ”).

Today the city is in the search of a new breath. Indeed for a few years the city has been in perpetual almost completed work which will undoubtedly enable him to attract many tourists.
