Arconce

The Arconce is a French river , affluent of the the Loire out of Right Bank. It crosses the south-Western part of the Département of Saône-et-Loire, in area of Burgundy and more precisely the Charollais and the Brionnais.

The course of Arconce

Arconce takes its source in Saône-et-Loire, in the south of the Mount-Saint-Vincent to ten kilometers in the south-east of Montceau-the-Mines, on the territory of Mary and takes from the start the direction of the south. It forms shortly after the pond of Rousset and carries on its road in direction of south-west. Its course comprises very many meanders. Arrived at the level of the forest of Charmays, close to Anzy-the-Duke, it changes orientation abruptly and moves towards the north-north-east, parallel to the Loire, in which it ends up being thrown to Game preserve-Saint-Germain, a little upstream of the town of Digoin. Arconce bathes in particular the town of Charolles, like Anzy-the-Duke.

Hydrology

Arconce is a rather abundant river, like the majority of the rivers of the Charolais. Its flow was observed over one 38 years period (1970-2007), with Montceaux-l' Star, locality very close to its confluence with the the Loire. The catchment area of the river is of 599 km ².

The interannual medium flow or module of the river with Montceaux-l' Star is of 5,65 m ³ a second.

Arconce presents seasonal fluctuations of flow marked enough, with high waters of end of autumn-winter carrying the average monthly flow on a level located between 6,5 and 11,8 m ³ a second, from November to March included (with an in February maximum). As of at the end of March the flow decreases gradually throughout spring to lead to the period of the low waters which proceeds mid-June mid-October, bringing a fall of the monthly medium flow up to 1,15 m ³ to August, which remains rather comfortable, it is true. But the fluctuations of flow can be more important according to the years and observed over shorter periods.

With the low water level the VCN3 can fall until 0,18 m ³, in the event of dry quinquennial period, that is to say 180 liters a second, which is not yet too severe, and corresponds to the average of the rivers of other rivers of the basin of the Loire. The VCN3 is the past minimal quantity or minimal flow over three days consecutive.

As for the risings, they can be important, characteristic divided by the majority of the affluents of the Loire. The QIX 2 and QIX 5 or calculated flows of biennial and quinquennial rising are worth respectively 55 and 72 m ³ a second. The QIX 10 or calculated flow of decennial rising is of 84 m ³ a second, the QIX 20 of 95 m ³, while the QIX 50 is worth 110 m ³ a second (see note).

The recorded maximum instantaneous flow with Montceaux-l' Star during this period, was of 148 m ³ a second on December 2nd, 2003, while the recorded maximum daily output was of 90,7 m ³ on November 5th, 2004. If one compares the first of these values on a QIX scale of the river, one notes that this rising was largely higher than the calculated flow of raw cinquantennale, and thus completely exceptional.

It is interesting to compare these flows of raw of Arconce with those of an important affluent of the Seine, the the Eure, observed in the Cailly-on-Eure. Whereas the QIX 10 of the Eure is worth 90 m ³ a second for a basin of 4  598 km ², that of Arconce are worth 84 of them, i.e. almost as much, but for a basin of only 600 km ² and a flow more than three times less. The same applies to the QIX 50: 110 for Arconce and 120 m ³ for the Eure. Thus, the risings of relatively modest Arconce are almost equivalent to those of the Eure.

On the whole, Arconce is an abundant river. The Lame of water past in its catchment area is of 299 millimetres annually, which is a little lower than the overall average of France all confused basins, but definitely higher than the average of the basin of the the Loire (244 millimetres). The specific Débit of the river (or Qsp) posts of this fact the figure of 9,4 liters a second and per square kilometer of basin.

Curiosities - Tourism

The basin of Arconce is given a civil and religious heritage architectural extremely rich. The following list is far from being exhaustive:

  • Anzy-the-Duke, his castle, its old priory and its superb Romance church, jewel of the area (Brionnais).

  • Charolles, its very rich architectural heritage energy of XIVe at the XVIIIe century, fruit of a glorious past.
  • Montceaux-l' Star, its Romance church of the Saint-Pierre-and-Paul of XIIe century.
  • Many Romance churches in Brionnais.
  • Firm strengthened in the neighborhoods of Charolles.
  • famous Gastronomy.
