Archipelago of the Friuli

The Archipel of the Friuli consists of four island S, the unit reaching 200 ha, is located approximately at 4 km at broad of Marseilles. the islands constitute one of the 111 districts of Marseilles: they are located in the 7th district.

The Archipelago

This archipelago is consisted of the islands of
  • Pomègues in the south
  • Ratonneau in north
  • the Château of Yew in the east of the two principal islands
  • Tiboulen in the west of Ratonneau

The largest islands of the archipelago are the Pomègues island (2,7 km length, 89 m of altitude to the maximum) and the island Ratonneau (2,5 km length, culminating to 86 m). The other islands are Tiboulen (what wants to say “Short period of island” into of Provence) and the island of Yew on which the old prison of the Castle of Yew is built which would have sheltered Edmond Dantès.

The islands Pomègues and Ratonneau are connected by the dam of Berry which was built as of 1822.

These islands shelter a remarkable natural heritage. Natural spaces of the Friuli were labellisés “Maritime Park of the Islands of the Friuli” by deliberation of the Municipal council of the Town of Marseilles dated November 25th, 2002. The Academy-Studies of the Ecosystems of Provence (CEEP) ensures daily management of it. The Maritime Park of the Islands of the Friuli aims to reconcile the human activities with the safeguarding of the natural heritage. A local by-law regulates the uses on terrestrial natural space of the archipelago: the camp-site and the bivouac, as well as fires, are strictly prohibited, the dogs must be obliged to leaves.

The seamen circle around the Friuli also presents a remarkable natural heritage. The quality of the underwater funds of the islands of Marseilles is famous. With many sheltered splits of the dominant winds, the archipelago of the Friuli constitutes a pleasure ground very attended and a site of diving sought at the time of difficult weather conditions.

The port of the Friuli can accommodate 500 yachtmen.

Approximately a hundred inhabitants live at the year on these islands, that they are reprocessed children, adults or, as well as yachtmen residing there at the year…

Archipelago with the multiple facets, the Friuli combines its incomparable position to see Marseilles in the good manners which is since the sea with, an insular lifestyle which approaches sometimes that told in the film 28 weeks later .

The free Republic of the Friuli

In July 1997, Jean-Claude Mayo and some friends decide to found this free Republic, in the form of galéjade, because " in our company, one forever right to make the idiot ".

The president, appointed for life, are Egrégore the Virtual one, while Jean-Claude Mayo becomes the conveyer Ministre about it verb .

The small republic publishes its clean Monnaie, the polymonnaie which has legal tender only in the republic.
