Archipelago of Izu

The archipelago of Izu (Izu shotoo 伊豆諸島 ) is a group of islands of volcanic origin located at the south-east of the course of Izu on Honshu (Japan) to broad of Tōkyō on which the islands depend administratively. The islands belong to the National park of Fuji-Hakone-Izu.

Description

This Archipel (諸島) is formed by the islands (島) following:
  • Ooshima (大島, “large island”) or Izu Oshima (伊豆大島) is the largest island located more at north. Being closest to Tokyo it is the island most visited by the tourists for his active volcano located in its center, the Mount Mihara (764m top). It is called the " volcano of the amoureux" , because it is in its crater that are judicious to throw, according to the legend, in love unhappy ones.

  • Toshima (Izu) (利島, “beneficial island”, 508 m)
  • Niijima (新島, “new island”, 432 m)
  • Shikinejima (式根島)
  • Kozushima (神津島, “island of the divine port”, 574 m)
  • Miyakejima (三宅島, the “third” cuts some, 815 m)
  • Mikurajima (御蔵島, “? ”).
  • Hachijojima (八丈島, “? ”, 854 m)
  • Aogashima (青ヶ島, “blue island”).

During the Period Edo, the islands of Miyake and Hachijo (perhaps of other) were the places of exile of the criminals.

The last inhabitants of Miyake were evacuated because of the risks of eruption of the Oyama mount which were declared in 2000. The volcano did not make however a damage.

It is said that Miyakejima is the birthplace of the monster Godzilla.
