Archie Shepp
archie Shepp (is a saxophonist tenor, soprano, Pianiste, Chanteur, Compositeur of Jazz and playwright, American. It was born the May 24th 1937 in Florida with Fort Lauderdale but grew with Philadelphia in Pennsylvania where it studied the Piano, the Clarinette and the Alto saxophone before moving towards the Saxophone tenor (it plays regularly of the Soprano saxophone).
Biography and style
At its beginnings in 1960 with Cecil Taylor, it is one of the founder of the Free jazz, with revolted discs, " Music" fire; , " Mama Too Tight". It directs then the Attica blues, Big band at the beginning of the Années 1970, loan of Soul and Blues, styles which will influence then all its work until today.It recorded with Cecil Taylor (Shepp appears on Air , The World Of Cecil Taylor and Cell Walk For Celeste three albums significant of Taylor), John Coltrane, John Tchicai, Chico Hamilton, Sunny Murray, Dave Burell, Philly Joe Jones, Mal Waldron, Horace Parlan, max Roach, Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Don Cherry, Bill Dixon, Paul Bley, Lester Bowie, Anthony Braxton, Richard Davis, Wayne Dockery, Jimmy Garrison, Roy Haynes, Billy Higgins, Freddie Hubbard, Elvin Jones, Bobby Hutcherson, Steve Lacy, Jimmy Lyons, Abbey Lincoln, Jeanne Lee, McCoy Tyner, Cedar Walton, Reggie Workman, Ted Curson, Frank Zappa, to quote only them.
That it is to the tenor or to the soprano, its style is characterized by sentences with its edge, with uneven of the notes impressive ones and a permanent expressive power.
Years 1970 with the beginning of the year 2000, archie Shepp was professor at the Department of studies Afro-Americans of the Université of Amherst in the Massachusetts. He taught the music and the history of the music Afro-American.
For a few years archie Shepp has given many concerts in the whole world with its four-bit byte made up of Wayne Dockery to low, Tom McClung with the piano and Steve McCraven with the battery.
In 2006, archie Shepp made of beautiful appearances on two pieces of " Identity in crescendo" , the second album of Rocé, singer of French rap in love with the free jazz.
In November 2007 in New Morning archie Shepp makes a new experiment with Raghunath Manet player of Veena (Indian music) and choreographer of Bharata Natyam dances Indian. November 29th, 2007, he plays Tryptique in Paris within the framework of his collaboration for film “24 Measurements”, first feature film of Jalil Lespert with Benoit Magimel.
After accomodatebeing accommodated with the Cartier Foundation for the contemporary art in April 2006 during the cycle set of themes " Nights noires" wandering Evenings, archie Shepp returns on scene to celebrate its 70 years on Monday, May 7, 2007 with 19:30. The Wandering Evenings and Archieball present: Born Free , a concert exceptional birthday in the garden of the Cartier Foundation. With Born Free , archie Shepp inaugurates an exceptional and daring meeting between American, French and African musicians, all confused generations. Between hip hop, libertarian jazz and African music, the project Born Free is the most succeeded current expression of the African-American music. Because there is no birthday without surprises, archie Shepp will invite at the time of this concert except standards some of best the jazzmen which accompanied it during its career.
