Archie Carr

archie Carr (or Archibald Fairly Carr, Jr. ) is a American herpetologist , born the June 16th 1909 with Mobile (Alabama) and dead the May 21st 1987 with Micanopy (Florida).
Wire of Pasteur presbytérien, it grows with Mobile, in Alabama, with Fort Worth, the Texas and Savannah, in Georgia. His/her father gives him the love of nature and the Carr young person very early raises Reptile S. After studies with the Davidson_College in North Carolina, then to the Rollins College of Winter Park (Florida), it enters to the Université of State of Florida where it obtains his Bachelor off Sciences (1932), its Master off Sciences (1934) and its pH. D. (1937). It there studies the Zoologie under the direction of the limnologist James Speed Rogers (1892-1955) and specializes in Herpétologie, its thesis is the first study of the herpétofaune of Florida.
Carr becomes member of the University of Florida (1937) and passes his the first seven summer to supplement its studies with the Université Harvard near Thomas Barbour (1884-1946).
It will be devoted primarily to the study of the tortoises and will become one of the best specialists in the marine tortoises. He writes many books and articles, among those Ulendo: Travels off has off Naturalist in and out Africa , High Jungles and Low , So Excellent has Fishe (on its green tortoises), The Windward Road and several books for the collections of Time-Life like The Everglades and The Reptiles . He is also the author of Handbook off Turtles and cosigné with Coleman J. Goin (1911-1986), Guide to the Reptiles, Amphibians and Freshwater Fishes off Florida . Very serious in its scientific descriptions, it had a great direction of the humor, which leads it to make appear a parody of keys of determination, off has Subjective Key to the Fishes Alachua County, Florida , called the Clé of Carr .
Carr becomes a true legend within the University of Florida and its training courses on the ground are followed by very many students.
Carr was also famous for its efforts to protect fauna, in particular the turtles. His wife Marjorie, lawyer in the field of the environment, actively supported it in her activities. The couple are at the origin of the creation of Florida Defenders off the Environment. The action of Carr in favor of the environment is worth the gold medal of the World Wildlife Fund (1973) and the Borland price to him by the National company Audubon (1984). In recognition of the value of its scientific activity, the Université Tulane allots to him a title of honorary doctor of sciences (1985). It receives the Médaille Daniel Giraud Elliot off allotted by the National Academy Sciences in 1952.
